New-Old Games - A reboot to the face, or a remake of an old flame?

If anyone remembers the reference,
you're older than you think.

With the current trend of classic games being brought back as either reboots or complete re-imaginings, I'm putting my two pence worth down and sharing three games I would to see given the digital going over.

A lot of people may think developers are getting too lazy by not inventing new IP and not being original with bringing out remakes and HD editions for games, now at times I may agree but the same can go for the countless iterations of games with just a new year tagged onto the end of the title. To be honest I quite like the idea of games being remade for a number of reasons.

One, who doesn't like prettier graphics? Giving a classic game a HD remake is nice and doesn't mess around with the gameplay you knew and loved, it just gives it that finer sheen. To be honest when you imagine those games back then you probably thought oh my god it cannot get better than this! Then on a revisit you think ouch really I thought these graphics were good? Much like a drunken pull, but luckily with games you can give them a HD makeover and they are all better again.

The games industry in retrospect has not really been around for a very long time but unfortunately at the detriment of showing my age there are now new generations playing games. And these generations probably have never even heard of XCOM or Syndicate or Monkey Island, and that's a sad world we live in if the youth and younger youth of today can't experience these games. So hey let's remake the game so they can enjoy it too!

And one of the big things about having classic games being remade is that these classic games are dying off. Due the the nature of games industry, backwards compatibility is a nightmare. One of the main features of the current gen consoles was backwards compatibility but it seems a lot of games just don't work at all. And let's not even get started into the whole PC games arena.  I'm not saying it's impossible to play these old classic games, going onto sites like gog.com and there is a plethora of classic PC games that operate on new systems. But try and pick up your original copy of the game you picked five years ago and it's a different story.

Sometimes is can be done really badly but the same can said for anything but sometimes it can bring a classic back to life and rekindle your love for it, and also bring new love to the game. So in conclusion Classic games + done well  = Big love.

Now without further ado here is a few games I would like to see given a nip and tuck and brought back from the dead whether it be in sequel form or just a reimagining for the new generation.

System Shock

Here Shodan, Nu-Rave eyeliner's not in anymore

When have you had a game where you love the villain more that you do the protagonist you're playing. A lot of games have quite faceless evils, take Dead Space with it's lifeless necromorph where you know what you're fighting but not who. Now rewind back to 1994 and 1999, System Shock was an enemy with a very real identity, a virtual one but very real. System Shock was a cheap way of a woman telling you how worthless you were and putting her heel into your nads.  Bringing this game back in either a sequel from where it left off at the end of two or maybe putting it back onto Citadel station, I don't really care I just need some more Shodan.

7th Guest/11th Hour

Umm, think you might want to get out now.
A really cheesy horror storyline, some complex puzzles and really poorly acted cutscenes made this a bit of a favourite PC game for me back when it was released in 1993. A haunted mansion owned by a toymaker who sold his soul to make millions in return of killing all the children who played his games. The game involved investigating rooms of the house to solve puzzles and ultimately the mystery of the mansion. Now how this gets brought back I don't care as long as it involves some mind bending puzzles and a horror storyline straight of the 80s. If you want to check out the 11th hour cutscenes has one big film go here, I truly recommend it if you like bad acting and bad but so good storyline.

Blade Runner

Cops of the future love a good pose

Most (ok pretty much every) game based on a movie sucks as much as the next ITV2 series of 'What's Peter Andre having for Breakfast' but some games that take revolve around a movie universe can be an absolute gems. GoldenEye on the N64 was made 2 years after the film but loosely based around the film this game put some massive wings on the evolution of the FPS genre. Blade Runner is a classic game set around the same time of the film but only linked in some very small in game references. A classic point & click game with some cutting edge graphics it was a great experience with multiple endings based on the choice you made. Another game set in the Blade Runner universe with similar adventure games styling and a Voight-Kampff with a kind of LA Noire style interrogation where you could get things very wrong would make for an interesting game.

Those games are probably totally off the radar in terms of what a lot of people might want to be seen brought back but these are just a few I would like to see outside the normal games people are crying out for.

What games would you want to see brought back? Comment please!
